Unpainted floors, stairs, wooden furniture and other parts without varnish finish look luxurious and elegant and are an integral part of the equipment of many boats. However, thanks to its structure,  the wood is very vulnerable if exposed to water, moisture, salt, microorganisms, mold and especially sun rays. As a result, it means a faded appearance, fading, gradual decomposition and cracking. Such wood does not only looks ugly and gives neglected impression, but it is much harder to maintain. Dirt and other stains adhere directly to the wood structure and cannot be cleaned in the usual way. In addition, the structure of the wood is getting coarser and thus everything multiplies.

The patented technology creates an invisible breathable membrane on the surface that protects the wood. It strengthens its structure and protects against aging. The main added value is strong UV filters, which prevent extremely fast fading. The protective layer lasts in the daily sharp sea sun shining for 6 months, in milder conditions even 12 months. Even though the protected surface lightens slightly after a while, the nano protection still works. The surface repels water and dirt. The maintenance is much easier, wood gets much less dirty and it is significantly easier to clean. The nanolayer does not let water droplets to soak into the surface, so it protects the wood from moisture, the spread of fungi, bacteria and molds that normally attack it. The UV filters contained in the polish also prevent the damage from sunlight and delay the fading process. The composition contains "nourishing" ingredients which, thanks to the membrane, are kept inside the wood and the wood thus retains its natural appearance for much longer than when treated with conventional oil and wax-based compositions. Protection is also suitable for the boat interiors. It does not increase risk of slipping on the surface.

If you have varnished wood you don´t  protect directly the structure of the wood, but the varnish. Use therefore Gelcoat PIKATEC protection for the exterior and Painted surface protection for the interior of the boat. Do you want to learn more about the technology?

Salt vs. Fresh Water.

All products are customized for extreme and demanding environments of marine conditions (salt water). Therefore, they are absolutely sufficient for fresh water as well. The only exception is protective polishes intended for the part of the ship below the waterline. There is a difference for use in salt or fresh water and it is more described directly under this product, which we call Antifouling Protection. It is essential not to confuse Home products with Boat products. Household products are not designed for such extreme conditions and their functionality therefore could be limited. That´s why there is a price difference connected to the higher concentration of nanoparticles and active ingredients.

How does the protection close the wood surface?

Applications of nanocosmetics

Application of the products is not complicated at all. You only need to follow 3 steps. If the wood is not new, the surface must  be first stripped of old paint or damage, then washed the dust and applied a protective polish. After 12 hours, the nanolayer finally hardens. Always read the current instructions, sometimes one more layer may be needed, it should be applied not earlier than 12 hours after applying the first layer.

Surface preparation

Before protection polish application clean the surface as follow: first wash the surface with PIKATEC Shampo for boats. If salt, limescale, stains,  or other dirt o remain on the surfaces you want to protect, or if the surface has already been too dry, we recommend sanding, washing, drying the surface and then preparing the surface for a protective polish. If you have waxed or oiled the surface in the past, we always recommend sanding the top layer and degreasing it with our degreaser after washing and drying it. If you have recently applied wax or oil, or have a new boat treated in this way from the factory, we recommend letting this previous protection expire for about 3 months and then follow the instructions you know.

If the surface was sufficiently clean and degreased though, just washing with the shampoo is enough and you can proceed straight to the application. For new boats, we recommend just degreasing the surface with the Nano Degreeser and Polisher BOAT before application. To this way prepared surface you can directly apply the protective polish - please follow the instructions below.

Surface maintenance after application of protective layer

Surfaces treated with Pikatec nanocosmetics are smoother, much more resistant to damage and only water and a microfiber cloth are sufficient for their maintenance.  You can wipe off any dirt lightly with it and the treated surfaces will always look like new. If the surface remains greasy after wiping with a cloth, we recommend degreasing the greasy surface once in a while with our degreaser, the hydrophobic effect will be restored and the surface will be less dirty again.

Application of protection polishes

Take care of  apply the protection on a properly prepared surface.  It should be ashed, degreased and dried, or sanded.

Check the material for traces of water droplets or other stains. These need to be removed before application, otherwise you could overlay with polish forever and it would be very difficult to get rid of them afterwards. Shake the product thoroughly before use and during application. Depending on the size of the surface, the protective polish can be applied to the wood by gradual spreading with an application cloth (if the surface is smooth) or a microfiber pad. For larger areas and patterned surfaces, the product can be applied by painting or spraying. However, it is always important to apply only a thin layer of the product, which "absorbs" into the structure of the wood and creates an impermeable membrane on its surface. After grinding, leave on for about 1 hour and check that in some places you have not applied too much layer on the wood that the wood will not absorb. In this case, it will be necessary to polish this part with a microfiber cloth after 1 hour, if the layer is too thick and cannot be polished, use Nano Degreaser and polisher BOAT.

For old or overdried wood, we recommend applying two coats as needed. Consumption for the first layer will be higher and for the second will decrease to 60-50%. Always apply additional layers only after the first application has hardened completely, after 12 hours. If you applied earlier, you would still apply one coat, but thicker, which is undesirable in terms of bonding and hardening the polish to the surface. Before the second application, always check that the surface is clean, especially on wooden surfaces that are exposed to external influences. The last phase is polymerization, when Nano Protect Wood BOAT hardens about 12 hours after spreading the last layer and gain the final strength and flexibility. About two weeks after application, it is advisable to wash the surface with warm water and Nano Clean Home Universal Cleaner concentrate or PIKATEC shampoo for boats. This clean greases which the protective polish additionally removes from the surface (so-called emulsifiers) and which can reduce the water-repellent effect until removed.

Additional information:

• The protective polish is also used on wood treated with various oils. For these surface treatments, however, we recommend waiting with the application until the oil stops working, resp. until the surfaces begin to change their appearance. The nanoparticles exclude grease from the structure of the protected material, so if we treated the oiled wood earlier, it could happen that for a long time we will have to wash these greases in the form of various oil coatings from the surface. If this happens, we recommend cleaning the surfaces with hot water with PIKATEC shampoo concentrate for boats, or Universal Cleaner - Nano Clean Home, or locally with the help of the product Surface Cleaner - Nano Clean Surface. In extreme cases, with a strong concentration of oil in the wood, it is necessary to wipe the surface continuously with Nano Activator.
• Outdoor wooden parts are exposed to extreme natural influences such as sunlight, humidity, wind, rain and flying dirt (grease). Especially with load-bearing surfaces such as floors or storage areas, there are rapid changes in the appearance, drying and cracking of wood. Compared to other products, the Nano Protect Wood BOAT significantly prolongs the interval after which these changes begin to occur. For surfaces loaded in this way, you can strengthen the protection of the wood by applying a Superstructure cover polish to the species layer, which is extremely water-repellent, closes the wood surface even more and, while maintaining breathability, further delays the "degradation" process. We recommend testing the application of the cover polish on a small and less visible surface area so that you can evaluate the resulting visual effect. Superstructure polish can create a slightly glossy appearance.
• If you treat varnished wood, you do not directly protect the structure of the wood, but the varnish. Use Gelcoat PIKATEC for the exterior and Nano Protect Painted Surface for the interior of the boat.
• Use the polish immediately after opening the bottle.
